LESSON-10 DISCIPLESHIP
2 Corinthians 5:17–20…The Mission of Sons…Living as ambassadors of reconciliation and restoration
LESSON 10 DISCIPLESHIP
2 Corinthians 5:17–20 describes the mission of Christians as "ambassadors for Christ" who are called to be "sons" of God, living out their new identity in Christ through the ministry of reconciliation. God, through Christ, reconciled the world to Himself, and this task is now entrusted to believers, who convey God's message of reconciliation to others by pleading with them to return to God. As ambassadors, believers are not to remain silent but to serve as a constant voice for their kingdom, embodying God's appeal to the world.
The New Identity of a Believer
New Creation
Anyone in Christ becomes a new person, with the old life gone and a new one begun. This transformation is a gift from God, who brought people back to Himself through Christ.
Reconciled to God
God has reconciled the world to Himself through Christ, no longer counting sins against people.
The Mission of Reconciliation
Living as an Ambassador for Christ
A Voice for Christ
Just as an ambassador in a foreign land communicates their nation's words and positions, believers serve as a constant voice, bearing their kingdom's message.
Be reconciled to God
The core message conveyed is a plea on behalf of Christ for others to be reconciled to God.
A Passion to Please God
This mission becomes a Christian's primary passion, as their lives are meant to please God, not themselves.
Key Aspects of Being an Ambassador
Proclaim the Message:
The role of an ambassador involves delivering a clear and direct message of reconciliation.
Represent God's Position:
Believers reflect the official position of Christ, their sovereign King, in all they say and do.
A Continuous Calling:
This is a lifelong mission, not a one-time event, requiring believers to live in a way that consistently represents Christ.
This passage—2 Corinthians 5:17–20—is a cornerstone for understanding the mission of sons: men reborn in Christ, commissioned not just to believe, but to build, restore, and reconcile.
Core Passage: 2 Corinthians 5:17–20 Identity: New Creation, Not Renovation
• “If anyone is in Christ…” — This is sonship language. You’re not just forgiven—you’re reborn.
• “New creation” — Not patched-up masculinity. Not behavior modification. A spiritual rebirth that reclaims identity, purpose, and agency.
• “Old has passed away…” — Shame, rebellion, passivity, counterfeit strength—all buried. Sons rise with new authority.
Mission: Ministry of Reconciliation
•God… gave us the ministry of reconciliation” — This is the assignment of sons. Not spectators. Not consumers. Agents of healing.
•Reconciliation isn’t just vertical (God and man)—it’s horizontal:
•Fathers to sons • Brothers to brothers • Communities to justice
•Men to their true selves Role: Ambassadors of the Kingdom
•We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors…” — Sons don’t just represent themselves. They carry the authority, character, and message of the King.
•Ambassadors live in foreign territory. Earth isn’t home—it’s the mission field. • “God making His appeal through us…” — You are the voice, the vessel, the visible witness of reconciliation.
How This Lands in FMO This passage is tailor-made for our and men’s track. It’s the theological spine of our men’s movement: • Brotherhood Challenge: 7-day Reconciliation Mission — Reach out, restore, rebuild.
