You are not alone
Men are not the only ones that can develop addiction to sex. A conservative poll from ChristiaNet reported by Marketwire.com in August, 2006 showed that 20% of all Christian women are addicted to pornography. That is not the percent of women who have ever viewed pornography, those percentages are much higher, this is the percent actually addicted to pornography. And that was in 2006.
We continue to hear from pastors that an increasing number of women from churches are confiding in church leadership that they have become ensnared by addiction to some form of sexual conduct. Some counselors call women's addiction to sex a form of love addiction. Sexual addiction in women does have significant differences than found in male sex addicts.
Sexual addiction in women is often focused around trying to find acceptance and value through fantasy or sexual behavior. The addiction never fills the need but the addict continues to try to meet the need through the same destructive behavior. These negative behaviors continue in spite of the damage it does to them and those around them.
Our society is less understanding of women who have sexual addiction problems than men, making it even harder for women to have the courage to seek help. Hopefully, in time, this trend will change and more women will feel comfortable in seeking help.
At the moment, Pure Life Alliance does not have the resources to run support groups for women suffering from sexual or love addiction. It is our goal to be able to offer support groups in this area in the near future. In the mean time, many of our local network counselors do have the expertise to deal with these issues on a one-on-one basis (see the Counselors link in this site). In addition, L.I.F.E. Ministries at www.freedomeveryday.org has written material for women suffering from sexual addictions. You can also find other websites that contain help in this area in our Related Links section.
